A group of 12 interns from the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty arrived at our Home today to assist with a gardening project led by Sr. Frances Catherine and Sr. Jacintha and to share dinner with the Residents. Mother Patrica Mary let the Residents know that the young people would be joining them.
The interns came from across the country — Stanford, California; Indiana; New Jersy — and filled our dining room with conversation. One intern spoke Spanish and spent time with Eloisa, one of our Spanish-speaking Residents; two interns sat with the priests; others spread out among the tables. “Everyone was talking, talking, talking,” Mother said. “It was just so lovely to see the smiles of both the Residents and interns.”
For many this was a double first: their first week interning at Becket and their first time volunteering with the Little Sisters. “It’s been great so far,” Joe said. “The Sisters and Residents have been really kind.” Resident Maria shared that she had two young people at her table and that she very much enjoyed speaking with them.
“This has been very meaningful work,” Bella Brannon said. “It’s truly been a gift from God to hear the life stories of the Residents and their zest for life. It has also been especially gratifying to speak with the Sisters about their mission and to get out of the office and work with our hands.” Bella added that she might come back to volunteer outside of her internship.
“The service and generous hearts of these young people have truly blessed our Home and our Residents,” Mother Patricia Mary said.
The Becket Fund is a nonprofit public-interest law firm based in Washington, D.C. We are grateful for the service and generous hearts of these young people; their help today blessed our Home and our Residents.
