Little Sisters of the Poor Honored

The Guadalupe Radio Network (GRN) honored the Little Sisters of the Poor at its 2024 Fishers of Men Benefit dinner April 27 at Catholic University’s Heritage Hall in Washington, D.C. This year’s theme was: “Being Catholics in the Age of Eucharistic Revival.” Mother Margaret Regina accepted the award on behalf of all the Little Sisters worldwide, calling the recognition “a great encouragement!”

According to GRN, the award is given to those who serve the Church heroically and deliberately in Christ, who evangelize the faith and build up the Kingdom of God, who cherish life. The Little Sisters of the Poor dedicate themselves to caring for the aged poor in 31 countries, despite the increasing trend of assisted suicide and euthanasia. They stand up for religious freedom all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Prior to the reception and dinner, Baltimore Archbishop William E. Lori celebrated Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception emphasizing unity with the Lord. The Gospel reading was most appropriate: we are called to be fruitful, with our Lord as the vine and we are the branches. “Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit,” said Jesus [John 15:5].

Archbishop Lori prayed the invocation and blessing at the dinner. The Little Sisters “revere the sacredness of human life,” he said. “They promote a family spirit. They are compassionate. They are utterly responsible. And they affect the lives of those they serve as well as their families.” Erik Rosales of EWTN’s News Nightly emceed the evening’s program. EWTN and GRN Radio Host Debbie Georgianni gave the Keynote address.

An inspirational speaker, Debbie shared her challenges and insights, referring to Carlo Acutis who was beatified in October 2020. Carlo died at the age of 15 from leukemia. During his brief lifetime, he was devoted to the Holy Eucharist, his gateway to Heaven and his profound words resonated with the audience, urging reflection on living a life pleasing to God.

Nearly 200 people attended the April 27 dinner. The menu consisted of heirloom tomatoes marinated in herbs, served with burrata cheese; braised short rib with whipped gouda mashed potatoes, and garlic-roasted asparagus; and for dessert, warmed lava cake with fresh berries and cream.
