A Time for Gratitude and Togetherness at the Jeanne Jugan Residence

As the last of autumn’s leaves gently fall, the Jeanne Jugan Residence comes alive with the spirit of Thanksgiving. This cherished time of year unites our “little family” comprising Residents, Little Sisters, Volunteers and Employees – in a celebration of gratitude and community.

The festivities began on Wednesday afternoon with a heartfelt Gratitude Circle in our café. Our community gathered to share reflections on what they are most thankful for, expressing gratitude for the blessings in their lives. Nilla, the assistant director of nursing, conveyed her joy in working here, stating, “I’m so happy to work here. It’s a wonderful opportunity that you allow us to care for you. You are in my heart.” Her words resonated deeply with everyone present. Susan, a Resident, shared her gratitude for the divine, saying, “God is completely good. I am so thankful for God, Joseph and Mary.” In unison everyone added, “and Jesus,” to which she agreed with a smile. These moments of sharing remind us of the many blessings in our lives, from a roof over our heads and loving family and friends, to the beauty of waking each morning and the spiritual joys that enrich our souls.

On Thanksgiving day, Residents and some of their family members gathered in the sweetly decorated dining rooms for a delicious and memorable feast. Msgr. Bazan led the blessing on the first floor, while Fr. Edward Flanagan, O.F.M., offered a thanksgiving blessing on the second floor. We are privileged to feed between eighty to ninety-five people every day, and this special day was no exception.

In preparation for Thanksgiving, Charron and the entire Unidine team in the kitchen ¾ including the chef, utility workers, cooks, and pantry aides ¾ worked tirelessly to create and then serve a meal that was nourishing and celebratory. Hand-carved turkey took center stage, and their dedication ensured that each Resident enjoyed a meal crafted with love and care.

The communal menu featured favorite dishes beyond the turkey with gravy, including ham, cranberry sauce, stuffing, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie. Those serving the meal made sure that everyone’s plates and hearts were full. The camaraderie and warmth shared during this time embody the spirit of care that defines our community.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the volunteers and donors who make our mission among our Elders possible. Your generosity allows us to create a nurturing environment where love, dignity, and community thrive. We are especially thankful for the presence of grandchildren, children, siblings, and other family members, who joined us on Thanksgiving, adding warmth and joy to the occasion. We also appreciate the families who picked up their loved ones so they could join in their own family celebrations.

As we reflect on this Thanksgiving we are reminded of the power of gratitude and togetherness. Thank you for being part of our “Little Family” and for helping us to create a community filled with love and joy.
